STEM SUMMIT USF/AAUW-JUNE 20, 2009
Yes, it is possible for the SCSW to be in two places on the same day.
The SCSW and the MCSW were co-contributors and supporters of this very important conference for middle school girls encouraging them to pursue studies and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This event brought together over 60 middle school girls from Sarasota and Manatee counties who have a desire to study in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The summit featured keynote speaker, Dr. Ellen Prager, a nationally-acclaimed chief scientist of the Aquarius Reef Base in Key Largo, FL, the only undersea research station. The summit also offer workshops led by top USF STEM women faculty and community leaders to give the girls a greater understanding of what the STEM fields encompass and the opportunities they provide and G. Wiz Science Museum provided research-based hands-on activities utilizing Florida’s new science standards! Through the collaboration with AAUW and Girls, Inc. and the participation of the many different community organizations such as Take Stock in Children of Sarasota County, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, Just for Girls, and the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, this summit will build the girls’ confidence as well as provide them with the tools they need for educational and economic success in the STEM fields. Carson was a Mortgage Broker in Sarasota and Bradenton for many years. Prior to relocating to Sarasota, she worked with the EPA and on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. In addition to being active on other committees, she participated in and helped arrange our Women's Panel on Affordable Housing in 2001 and, in the 4 yrs she was on the CSW, she helped 4 of our CSW members into homeownership or RE investment ownership who would not have taken that step otherwise!
